This famous and important temple dating from 1383 enjoys a prominent position in Chiang Mai, overlooking the city from its mountainside perch.
It sits about 3,520 feet above sea level and is accessible via a steep naga staircase comprising around 300 steps. The temple has a huge golden chedi (spire), within which lie some holy Buddha relics that attract devotees from the world over.
A walk around the grounds reveals a variety of colorful and fragrant flowers and murals that depict Buddha's previous lives.
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is probably Chiang Mai's most important site for visitors, and certainly it's most visible. Built by King GueNa, the temple houses a large copperplate Chedi (twenty- two meters high) that is covered in gold and contains holy relics of the Lord Buddha. The temple has four chapels and an important golden Buddha image. To get there you either walk up a staircase (around 300 steps) or use a cable car.
Travelers have to remember that this is an active and living temple for Buddhists, and you have to dress appropriately.
Hours : 8a.m- 5p.m, Mon- Sun.
