Chiang Mai Zoo is located at the Huay Kaew road, a short distance away from the entrance to the University area.
This zoo comprises two waterfalls, lakes, an open park, camping spots with more than 6,000 animals and has different animal breeding areas It also offers some stunning views of the city. Among its recent arrivals are 10 penguins, the first ever in Thailand; gibbons, which are bred successfully and Chayo, the baby elephant born at the time of the Leonid meteor shower who became the symbol of the Bangkok Asian Games.
Many animals still live in cages, but the tendency is towards open enclosures resembling their natural habitat.
The zoo is situated on the side of a hill covering about 200 acres. Its natural surroundings add to its beauty. There are many eating joints in the zoo where you can enjoy a hearty meal.
