Loi Krathong offers a way to show gratitude to Mae Khongka, the Mother of the Waters. Taking place during the twelfth lunar month on the night of the full moon, this festival is rich in tradition.
A few days before the festival, people of all ages either build or purchase krathongs, the ceremonial offering to Mae Khongka, which are banana- leaf boats adorned with candles, coins and incense.
As the full moon rises, everyone takes their krathongs to the river's edge and sets them afloat. It is a beautiful sight to see. Additional activities include boat races and beauty contests.
The main nights for making / floating Krathongs and releasing the candle powered paper ballons/ lanterns "khom loi", is celebrated in the end of November, but the nightly festivities (Thai Boxing, Fireworks, Beauty Contests, Traditional and Modern Dancing, Traditional and Modern Music) start a couple of nights beforehand.
Hours: 7p- midnight.
