Chiang Mai's Chinese New Year's festivities can't match Bangkok's for size and scope, but they are nonetheless quite colorful and extravagant.
The country's first immigrants, the Tai, marched down from southern China to establish one of the first kingdoms in and around Chiang Mai. Lion dances, floats, parades and pageants all set to the cacophony of endless fireworks mark the event, providing a delight to the senses.
On this day Thais visit temples at this time of year to offer food to the monks and to participate in bathing ceremonies for Buddha images. At home, young people pour scented water into the hands of their parents and elders as a mark of respect and to receive the blessing of the older folk.
The festival takes place from morning to mid- night and given the volume of people expected in the area, probably the best way to get there is to take the subway.
Hours: Vary.
